Linear shower drains are a longer, slot-type drain that works best for curbless showers and showers with large-format tile. If you’re planning a bathroom remodel with major updates to the shower, this topic will come up.

Keep reading to find out why a linear shower drain may be a benefit, as well as a word about placement, function, and tile compatibility.

What is a linear shower drain and how does it work?

A linear shower drain is a narrow slot or channel, usually measuring anywhere from 24” to 60” in length. The floor of your shower will discreetly slope in one direction, angling all of that water toward the drain. This allows for larger format tiles and better suits curbless showers built for ADA-compliant accessibility.

A traditional drain is usually an approximately 4” diameter circle in the middle of your shower floor. The gentle sloping dips in toward the drain from four directions. That’s why they usually use smaller tiles or more intricate cuts.

Why choose a linear drain vs. center drain for your shower?

We see three reasons why people opt for linear: tile size, accessibility, and aesthetic appeal.

1. Tile size accommodation

Linear drains often cost more than center drains, but these costs are frequently offset by simplified tile setting. When you go linear, you can use shower floor tile up to 24x48” without making a bunch of cuts.

2. Curbless/ADA shower design

You can still choose a traditional drain for a curbless, accessible shower, but many find the linear drain enhances the result. The single-direction slope may feel safer under some feet. Some choose to have the linear drain installed under a bench.

3. Sleek, modern appearance

A slender drain position along a wall offers a more streamlined, contemporary look. It looks clean and may better showcase your choice of tile. The grate of a linear drain itself can be tiled for even more seamless style.

What tile size and type works with a linear drain?

You can use larger-size tiles with a linear shower drain. This is its primary benefit. That said, linear drain tile compatibility is relatively wide open. If you still want mosaic or non-slip penny tile, you’re good to go.

There are a few tile material and finish considerations. Porcelain tile is preferred for its lower water absorption rate. Some very textured tiles, especially natural stone, can impact the flow of the water toward the drain.

Do linear shower drains clog more than traditional ones?

No, they don’t. In fact, they may need to be snaked less often than center drains. However, you should clean it more frequently than you would a center drain.

Some linear slots can actually drain water faster, and they cover more surface area. That’s why they accumulate buildup faster.

Where should a linear drain go in your shower?

Basically, anywhere but the center. This defeats the purpose of a one-way slope. Here’s what to know about each viable placement:

  • Entryways. Some shower designs with no curbs or real enclosures put the drain at the entrance to prevent water from breaching the main bathroom floor. This can be a trickier install and is usually only done if necessary.

  • Along the back wall. This would probably be your first, best choice. The shower floor will slope away from the entrance, optimizing water control.

  • A side wall. An option for oblong or narrow showers where the rear wall isn’t as long as your drain.
