Consumer research shows that the main goals of most bathroom remodels include increasing storage and updating the aesthetic. But a remodel can also cut the time you spend scrubbing crevices and wiping water spots.
Today, we’re tackling easy-to-clean bathroom design. There’s sure to be something among these nine low-maintenance bathroom ideas.
Low-maintenance bathroom ideas for the shower
Hand-held shower heads are great for regular spray downs and rinses to ward off mildew. However, these more integrated design ideas reduce nooks, crannies, and grouted areas.
Large format tile
Cut the number of grout joints with a bigger tile. Stone-look porcelain tile is the easiest and least slippery option, taking little more than a weekly pass with a squeegee. Ask about stain-resistant epoxy grout for even more protection against mildew.

Linear drains
Larger tiles make it possible to install a linear drain instead of a traditional center drain. This way, the bathroom floor slopes in one direction instead of four, keeping water and soap scum from collecting.
Frameless glass enclosures
An open layout wet room cuts cleaning time by a lot. If you do need glass for the shower, choose frameless and see if just one panel (a half door) is sufficient to control the splash zone.
Faucets and hardware ideal for easy-to-clean bathroom design
If we find ourselves wiping down faucets every single day, we chose the wrong one. If there’s water that collects and gets scummy around the base, fingerprints and water spots galore, try one or more of these tips.

Single-hole faucets
Widespread faucet types have at least three components joined to the countertop or sink, creating more crannies for scum. Traditional style handles and unusual shapes can also add crevices. Look for a single hole with a simple lever and design.
Wall-mount faucets
If it’s the base of a faucet that’s driving you nuts keeping clean, consider a wall mount. This type keeps counters clear and eliminates the grimy seam for good. This is the option to choose if you do prefer more ornate or widespread faucet designs.
Brushed and matte materials
Toothpaste, water, and fingerprints consistently mar polished surfaces. Brushed nickel and brass are two timeless picks that won’t get dirty as quickly. Matte black can be an improvement, but it may not be the immediate choice if hard water or toothpaste splatter are ever-present.

Practical tips for a modern low-maintenance bathroom
Modern looks call to mind vessel sinks and open shelves. Those are two design features that may add to cleaning tasks, though. If you don’t want to clean your bathroom more than once or twice a week, try these instead.
Quartz countertops
Engineered quartz is high-quality, low maintenance, and comes in modern and trending patterns and colors. Most of all, it’s one of the most durable countertop materials we’ve ever known. Choose a satin or matte finish to further reduce maintenance.
Floating vanities
A floating vanity with slab-front cabinetry is a dream for those who keep a tidy bathroom. You can access the entire floor underneath and wipe down the front without hardware crevices.

Undermount and integrated sinks
The grime and slime that collects in the seam of a drop in or even the base of a vessel eats into your peaceful weekend. Undermounts and one-piece assemblies let you wipe mess and water straight off the counter and into the sink to be rinsed away.
