It’s a smaller detail, but a finishing touch that counts. Towels and curtains in jacquard, waffle weave, or with embroidery add more character than the white linens that don’t wear well. 

Go for a heavier gauge than you normally would; this is what feels luxurious. Add a patterned or contrasting runner rug with a textured weave instead of a plain, square mat.

Add living finishes.

Oil-rubbed metals, unlacquered brass, and brushed bronze deepen in character over time. Polished metals don’t feel as grounded or considered. The key to really making them work is to mix them.

Biophilic balance.

Nothing says organic and natural like a careful move away from clean lines. Slipper bathtubs, asymmetrical vessel sinks, and accent walls that call running water to mind are a few ways to add organic curves to modern remodels.

Wood tones (even in tile).

Today’s bathroom tile selection goes far beyond stone looks. Line bathing areas with woodsier patterns and tones. The subtle grain pairs effortlessly with your classic white tubs, walls, and sinks.

Edgier earth. 

Natural stone countertops like granite don’t have to look polished. A honed finish and a particular custom edge can ground a white vanity cabinet. Create raw surfaces with stone and tile, even as an accent.

 

Spa-like bathroom mistakes to avoid

Before you break ground, use these words of caution to get the perfect mix of sanitary and serene.

  • Cold, harsh lighting. Multiple light sources and the right color temperature make all the difference. 

  • High-gloss everything. Some shine and reflectivity are welcome. Temper each shiny feature with something muted and comfortable.

  • Going too minimal. A space can be clean and clutter-free, but still inviting. Think “seamless” over minimal. Large format tile, curbless showers, integrated storage. That feels easy and free-flowing, not empty.
