When you think of vinyl flooring, are you picturing your grandma’s old linoleum kitchen floors? Let’s bring you up to date. Technology hasn’t just brought us things like smartphones–it’s helped us develop and manufacture attractive, durable new composite materials.

Flooring has leveraged this as well or better than many other industries. Today, we’re answering the question, “What is LVT?” with the best places to install this ultra-modern, high-performing flooring solution.

What is LVT?

LVT stands for luxury vinyl tile. It’s a resilient, low-maintenance, and waterproof alternative to ceramic or porcelain tile. Instead of mortar, grout, or adhesives, quality LVT offers quick, seamless click-lock installation. It’s barely distinguishable from real stone on sight and is much more affordable.

What is the difference between LVP and luxury vinyl tile?

LVP is luxury vinyl plank. It differs from LVT in shape and appearance, but otherwise has many of the same benefits. LVP comes in long planks and is engineered to look just like wood. LVT comes in squares and mimics stone.

Luxury vinyl tile: Advantages and applications

LVT consists of different layers. Topcoats and wear layers accommodate high traffic. Decorative printed layers control its appearance. Meanwhile, a core makes it comfortable to walk on.

When it all stacks up, here’s what you can do with luxury vinyl tile.

Waterproof flooring for kitchens, baths, and more.

The biggest technological advancement in vinyl flooring is moisture resistance. From finishing your basement to remodeling your bathroom, LVT is made for wet areas.

It’s a cost-effective option for remodeling kitchens, all laundry rooms, entryways, and essentially any other living space.

Faster installation, easier removal.

You’d think the biggest of all luxury vinyl tile advantages is the price. For many, it is, but it’s also the speed and flexibility allowed with installing and replacing it. There’s no cure time with LVT; click it in and start living. If you decide a few years from now you’d like a different look, it comes up easily.

Not so with ceramic or stone tiles. Those are a bigger commitment in every area.

Safe, strong, and easy to care for.

Worried about replacing chipped and cracked tiles? Cleaning grout, regrouting, and sealing? Go for LVT instead. It won’t crack and only requires basic cleaning. And unlike hardwood, you won’t need to worry about the dog scratching it up.

Pitter-patter of tiny feet everywhere? Many types of LVT also have a slight texture that makes them less slippery than polished woods or slick stones.

More aesthetically pleasing than ever before.

Large format tiles, stone, and earth tones are just a few bathroom floor trends we see settling in for the foreseeable future. Get it faster for a lot less with LVT.

Stone-look luxury vinyl can give you the appearance of marble with none of marble’s many drawbacks and maintenance hassles. If you haven’t seen the latest advancements in LVT design, prepare to be astonished. There’s a style for every design–classic, contemporary, vintage-inspired, spa-like, and much more.

What is LVT? FAQ

How long do LVT tiles typically last?

LVT typically lasts anywhere from 10 to 25 years. Proper installation and a quality product have the biggest impact on its lifespan. Always check with the manufacturer for a warranty.

Is LVT used in high-end homes?

Yes, absolutely. Luxury vinyl tile is popular in high-end properties for a few key reasons. The most common is that it’s a responsible choice for large homes with pets and kids. Because it’s easier to remove than ceramic tiles, regularly updating it isn’t as much of a hassle.

Can I mop LVT flooring?

Yes, but it’s important to avoid flooding the floor–you don’t want a lot of water seeping between your tiles. Make sure your mop or sponge is well wrung out before washing the floor.

Is LVT ok in bathrooms?

Yes, it’s perfect for bathrooms. LVT is waterproof and ideal for humid areas. Best of all, you get the look of stone tile without the expense or time-consuming installation.
