In the last decade, approximately 40% of homeowners doing a kitchen remodel chose white or off-white cabinets. When one feature becomes so overwhelmingly popular, the pendulum is sure to swing in the opposite direction. Now people want tons of character development, moody layers, personal touches, and whimsy.

The good news is that you truly don’t need to ditch your white cabinets anytime soon. There are ways to work them into a more varied, current color palette. You’ll see plenty of that, plus some fresh cabinet shades, as we share some of the latest kitchen color ideas.

What kitchen colors are trending now?

Neutrals are getting warmer, and bolds are getting deeper. Trending colors for kitchens fit one or more of the following descriptions:

  • Creamy neutrals with warmer yellow and brown tones

  • Straightforward earth-tones, including sage, terracotta, and stony greige

  • Designer colors infused with black, from purple and mocha to darkest navy and deepest forest green

Kitchen color ideas: Backsplashes, countertops, and cabinets

Still like white? Keep it warm and bright. From there, consider these kitchen color ideas.

Pastels that play off granite.

As seen with the latest dirty neutrals, muting, muddying, or mattifying colors makes them feel more natural. That’s why this otherwise feminine, powdery peach looks right at home with a granite countertop.

Textured earth.

Latte-colored tile backsplashes are updated with texture that’s plain perfect next to natural stone countertops. A stacked stone accent panel introduces an entire palette of earthy colors that coordinate with everything from cream-colored cabinets to oiled bronze hardware.

Rustic style with a flash of classic cobalt.

Quaint cabin and cottage kitchens favoring rustic styles are no longer resting on flashes of florals. Square tiles are a functional, non-gimmicky way to add vintage flavor to homestyle spaces. A striking cobalt blue or bottle green takes it all the way back to the striking color characteristic of mid-20th century tile trends.

A lighter wash of color.

Can’t decide between trendy sage green or timeless, warm off-white? More people are mixing up their own kitchen color ideas by adding hints of hues to safe, classic choices. The overall impression adjusts itself with changes in light.

Two-toned kitchens for the best of both worlds.

Our favorite way to get creative with kitchen design is to choose multiple cabinet colors. A two-toned kitchen usually features the bolder choice on the bottom, but you can switch it up based on the desired effect.

Kitchen paint color ideas that add interest without overwhelming

There’s a middle ground between color-drenching down to the trim and simply adding a chocolate-taupe backsplash. If you want to carefully introduce color, but still want it to make an impact, start with the kitchen island.

Colors inspired by your favorite furniture.

Found the perfect island seating? Let it inform the color of your island cabinetry. Muting the green shown here and lightening it up a notch keeps it from becoming a flat, uniform match. It adds character without competing with the fine woods and customized appliance finishes.

Vibrant peekaboo colors.

If you want a bolder color, but are hesitant to paint the whole island, stick to one side. The pop of color and patterned tile floor dress up what would otherwise be described as a common all-white kitchen.
