Is a 60-inch or 72-inch bathroom vanity better for double-sink bathrooms?

Both sizes accommodate double sinks, but the storage and elbow room differ. If you can add a 72” vanity, you’ll have more countertop and usually more cabinet space below. 

However, you’re not sacrificing much by choosing the 60-inch. If you can handle smaller basins, you can squeak out a little more countertop. 

As you consider length, don’t forget depth and height. You should still have at least 36” of space in front of the vanity so drawers and doors can fully extend. A comfortable vanity height is even more important for ease of use.

 

What size bathroom fits a 72-inch vanity?

Bathrooms with a width of 10-12 feet are a great fit with 72” vanities. If you believe you have that, but are still worried it’ll seem oversized, consider this:

  • Total square footage. A bathroom with a vanity this long will be at least 120 square feet. If your bath doesn’t meet that, here’s how to fit a double sink in a small bath, minus the 72” vanity.

  • Floor space percentage. If a 72” vanity takes up 20-30% of the floor space (or less!), you’re good. Anything over might be slightly overwhelming. 

  • Cabinet depth. The standard cabinet depth of 72” bathroom vanities is around 22 inches. 

  • The industry standard for front clearance. That’s the 36” we mentioned earlier. So, with the depth you need about five feet from the wall behind the vanity to the other wall or shower entrance.
