Cabinets are usually the most expensive part of a kitchen remodel. No one could blame you for trying to excuse your way out of replacing them. However, cabinets also add the most value to your kitchen. More than counters, more than any fancy appliance.
A kitchen simply won’t run without them. Keep reading to learn the five obvious signs it’s time to replace your kitchen cabinets.
Signs it’s time to replace kitchen cabinets
As we’ll find, some cabinets that need replacing aren’t just inefficient; they’re unsafe.
1. There’s a lingering odor that won’t go away.
Some homeowners purchase older homes with musty smells they can’t seem to eliminate. Decades of buildup from the smoker who used to live there takes time and elbow grease to remove.
But odors that reek of mildew or mold are signs of former or current moisture damage and poor ventilation. If they won’t fully dissipate, it could be a respiratory hazard.

2. You’ve tried, but there’s still not enough storage.
Decluttering and organizing your kitchen won’t make up for the wrong dimensions or too little space.
If items keep getting knocked over in your cupboard, or your drawers are too shallow, organizers and accessories can only do so much. Many people tolerate these little daily inconveniences, but you don’t have to. Replacements tailored to your needs, with custom storage features, are the only permanent solution.
3. The materials are deteriorating.
Most kitchen cabinets are made of engineered wood. Like many manufactured materials, their quality and durability have come a long way in recent years.
If your old particleboard or plywood cabinets are flaking, crumbling, or coming apart in strips, there is no saving them. Replace them with structurally secure new cabinets that will last decades.
4. The look and/or function is too outdated.
Visible hinges, involuntary slamming, and drawers that shoot out at the slightest pull. Dated-looking wood finishes and stains that clash with the rest of your design.
It’s okay to replace old kitchen cabinets solely because you prefer modern touches. Frameless styles, soft-close drawers and hinges, and even elegant joinery lighting are worth every penny.
5. There’s obvious warping or water damage.
Too many people paint their cabinets, thinking they can squeeze a few more years out of them. They’re only spending extra money delaying the inevitable. Bowing bottoms, peeling layers, and even discoloration cannot be painted over.
You should never ignore this sign that it’s time to replace kitchen cabinets. Old cabinets damaged by prolonged exposure to humidity or leaks are a fall hazard.

Your kitchen cabinet replacement checklist
Ready to replace? You can secure brand-new kitchen cabinets customized to your taste and space in just three steps.
1. Identify your needs and collect inspiration.
More storage, aesthetic appeal, or a whole new layout. List everything that isn’t working about your current cabinets, and what you’d like instead.
From there, learn about the different cabinet styles. Consider how your favorite choices would be enhanced by appliance integration and hardware.
2. Measure your space.
Measure the complete length of any walls where you want to install cabinets. Measure the height of the same walls from different points, including the center and the corner.
Your kitchen will be measured again by a pro; this is just preliminary info gathering for the next step.

Kitchen cabinet replacement FAQ
Are cherry cabinets outdated?
No, cherry cabinets are an enduring, traditional choice. Plus, warmer tones and more lived-in luxury looks are growing in popularity, and cherry is a perfect fit for that.
The misconception can stem from the depth or style of the cabinet. Lighter cherry cabinets can look orange-y, which isn’t preferred by many. Some cabinet door styles recall specific time periods.
What’s the biggest sign it’s time to replace kitchen cabinets?
Warping and strong, mildewy odors that won’t go away are the biggest signs you need to replace cabinets as soon as you can. Drooping, unlevel cabinets are a safety hazard, not just a low-functioning eyesore.
Should I replace cabinets before countertops and flooring?
It depends. If you’re fully remodeling your kitchen in one project, it may be easier to start with flooring. Choose cabinets from there, and install countertops last. If one feature is in severe disrepair and needs replacing right away, it’s usually fine to tackle that one first.
What’s the most inexpensive way to replace kitchen cabinets?
The cheapest way to replace cabinets is to choose stock or refurbished cabinets. Stepping down in material quality can save a few bucks as well.
However, you may not get lasting results or the solution to all of your problems. Stock cabinets aren’t tailored to your space and storage needs. Refurbished cabinets are still further along in age and therefore more prone to wear.
How long does it take to install kitchen cabinets?
It can take one to three days to install your new cabinets. Larger kitchens with a lot of cabinetry can take up to five days.
You still need to plan and manufacture those cabinets well before it’s time to install. They’ll also be inspected for quality a few times along the way. Read more about the kitchen cabinet installation process.
