Kitchen Design with Character & Storage

This kitchen had a layout that technically worked, but the proportions made the entire room feel smaller than it is. The original cabinetry was undersized and didn't make efficient use of the available wall space, while the dark lighting left the kitchen feeling less inviting. The Designery Greensboro saw an opportunity to rethink the scale of the cabinetry and bring more purpose to areas that had previously been underutilized. The result is a kitchen that feels updated and functional, without losing any charm. 

Taking the cabinetry taller and wider immediately changed the visual proportions of the room while adding much-needed storage. A new bar area extends the kitchen into the adjacent space and creates a natural centerpiece, complete with wine and glass storage that is just as beautiful as it is functional. Glass-front and illuminated cabinetry provides another layer of functionality while giving the homeowners a place to display travel mementos and other pieces that make the space feel like home. Even the smaller details were considered, with accessories like spice racks helping make everyday storage more efficient. 

The backsplash was another opportunity to bring personality into the design. Rather than relying on a standard installation, the tile was arranged in a distinctive pattern to create a nearly custom look and add a sense of movement to the room. The combination of cabinetry, tile, and display lighting gives the kitchen a collected quality, balancing practical storage with the things the homeowners actually want to see. A workstation-style sink adds another functional upgrade, giving the main work area the versatility to support everything from everyday cooking to larger projects. 

One of the standout features is the library-style ladder incorporated into the kitchen. It adds an unexpected architectural element while providing practical access to the taller cabinetry, and it has quickly become a natural conversation piece. The new bar area is a favorite, expanding the usable footprint of the kitchen and giving the room a defined place for entertaining. Together, these details turn a kitchen that once felt miniature into a space that feels thoughtful, personal, and much better suited to the way it is used.
