What makes a space calming? When talking about peaceful morning routines, we probably think of a spare, spa-like bathroom. And it’s true–some of those features, like zero clutter, neutral palettes, and natural materials, do create a more Zen environment.

But for your most relaxing bathroom, let’s employ more of the senses, plus your own style sensibilities. Here are some bathroom design ideas that add the sight, sound, and scent of calm to summer days.

Storage and organization

Chances are, we won’t be going full minimalist. Still, reduce visual noise with hidden storage. Starting the day with clutter creates the opposite of calm.

Vessel sinks free up more vanity cabinet space for products and linens. Wider drawers, organizer inserts, and custom storage accessories keep everything tucked neatly out of view.

Add aromatherapy

Oil diffusers and scented candles are a classic way to get the benefits of aromatherapy during your morning routine. Bouquets of eucalyptus fixed to the shower head also help keep sinuses clear. The zesty yet earthy aroma of its natural oils is much better for those sensitive to fragrance or choosy about artificial scent.

Pipe in soothing sounds

Switch your usual up-and-at-‘em playlist for sound therapy tracks instead. Smart home systems or waterproof speakers can broadcast rainfall, babbling brooks, singing bowls, or chimes.

Starting the morning with a sound bath can help clear the mind and alleviate stress for a cooler, more collected demeanor all day long.

Green up your space…

Adding plants and other leafy greens to bathrooms is popular design advice on its own. But if you’re not feeling very neutral, try swatching some shades of subtle green paint. Blue is usually known as the most calming color, but softer greens have the same calming effect with a refreshing finish.

It’s also a great color to complement woven and wood elements common to calming bathrooms.

…or incorporate soothing lavender

Lavender is a relaxing essential oil most popular in aromatherapy. However, the color it shares a name with is psychologically associated with tranquility.

The palest, powdery purple is a perfect match for white ceramic tiles and fixtures as well as reflective surfaces like mirrors and chrome.

Mood-making with ambient lighting

Natural light is nice, but a calming bathroom environment doesn’t have to draw in the summer sun. Start with a muted, low-profile lighting scheme and gradually bump it up, mimicking our natural wake cycle.

Softer lighting from LED features, dimmers, and sconces is also a must for evening baths.

Go for a deeper clean

If baths are integral to your relaxation routine, you must go for an extra-deep tub. These are also a better choice for highly active people, as they retain heat longer to soothe aching muscles.

Depending on the design, you might also find that the super deep soakers take up less floor space than a traditional tub.

Personalize with art and décor

Smooth, white, visually clear spaces feel impersonal to some people, not serene. If you don’t feel at home in your own bathroom, start asserting your style here. Statement fixtures, bold cabinet colors, vintage finds, and your favorite art can absolutely be a design upgrade.
